Hot, hot, Florida summer. The air is so thick you are basically swimming in it. The river is only a half mile away at most, the gulf a few miles further, but it's not the kind of water you jump into to cool down. It's a different kind altogether.

The Berries
* Part One can be found here * Adam woke me before the sun rose. We packed and set out, but moved slowly at first. We gradually picked up speed until the sweltering heat forced us into any shade we could find. As hot as it was Adam assured me that it would be hotter tomorrow. It was best to conserve some energy, he said. I kept my eyes closed, forcing one foot gingerly in front of the other behind him as he scaled the side of the mountain.

Scuppernong
Roots My mom was obsessed with whole foods before it was a hashtag. I suspect the arrival of the internet had something to do with it. Before that happened, in my earliest, most foggy of memories, I recall eating the processed foods that are deemed “American.” McDonalds, delivery pizza, soda. Yet amongst these memories I find the first sparks of curiosity about the universality of food, the link between food and culture. It was lit by my father.

The Berries
When Irene fell ill, a dark mood fell over our village. What started as a headache a few days prior had turned and wiped her off her feet. Now, pale and helpless, the very air around her was sweltering and unbearable. I had never seen her like this before. Honestly I had never seen anyone like this.
